Day 0 of the coast to coast walk: Making my way from Oxford to Keswick. The worldly and/or inquisitive among you will discover that Keswick is quite a ways inland from the coast which makes it an odd place to start a coast to coast walk. Well. There is a reason for that. The group I signed up to go with organized the walk into 3 legs. One for each UK national park I will be walking through. During each leg we stay in the same town and get bussed to (from) wherever the walk starts (ends) that day. Then there are two non-walking days where we switch towns via bus. Not quite the walk Wainwright had in mind, I imagine, but I think it will have its perks: not having to pack everything up each day, more time to enjoy what I'm told are great towns (which I can already partially confirm from walking around Keswick so far), and check out this view:
That's right. For the first four nights I'll be waking up to that every morning.
So, after riding two trains and a bus (not an easy feat with a gigantic pack and tiny UK trains) I made it to the camp ground and set up my tent in a fairly decent amount of rain which wasn't the most pleasant of experiences... Then I walked around town a bit (pictures to come when it's not so muggy), got some fish and chips and promptly fell asleep at 8:30 pm. All in all, I think the day went pretty well despite all my belongings now being somewhat damp.
