C2C Day 10: From Bogs to Fogs

Hike Notes

Today was kind of a bland day. There was a ton of fog in the early morning as we left Reeth, which stayed with us till about midday. It caused us to lose our way in some farmland once and we ended up having to backtrack about a mile to get on the right path.

We did come across a pretty neat sign though.

What if, like me, both your feet are wrecked?

Stopped for lunch in a little village called Marske.

The last part of the walk was through a muddy forest and into Richmond.

I wasn't doing too well by the end of it. My feet hurt pretty badly and, with the two mile detour, I was definitely ready to end the hike. We stopped in Richmond, the town we have our accommodations in, and I immediately went to my room to lay down. Today was fairly mediocre, compared to other days.

Lunch At The Co-Op

I have been getting the same things for lunch at the local co-op this week:

  • chicken and bacon sandwich
  • grape and strawberry fruit cup
  • poweraid
  • 1L bottle of mineral water (x2 sometimes)

Total cost: 4 pounds, 5 pence.

The fruit and poweraid are amazing. I won't change that unless I have to. The only weak link that I see myself getting sick of is the sandwich. But none of the other sandwiches look very appealing. They all have hard boiled egg in them. Blech! I could probably cut costs by using tap water but, and I know this is silly, bottled water just tastes better :/ Don't worry though, I recycle when I can!

Hikers Exposed: Sam's Sick Day

As promised, Sam stayed in Richmond today to see a doctor since she had such a hard time yesterday. I meant to go see her after the walk but went back to my room first to decompress and clean myself up a bit. Once I was recharged I walked over to her B&B and got her hosts to let her know I was at the door.

She still didn't look great: pale skin with tired and bloodshot eyes. But she seemed to have a bit more energy and sort of resembled her chipper self again. She was glad to see me and told me about her day. "Walked to the hospital. Not far". She had to wait for a couple hours before she was even seen. Apparently the doctor said it was a kind of shock due to acute exhaustion or something and that she should be fine to hike after a day of rest (and only if she takes it easy). Great!

I guess she was getting ready for bed since she had her robe on. At one point she pushed the sleeves up and I saw her now unbandaged arm. It didn't look good against her pale skin. At the risk of giving too much information, it didn't seem to be scabbing over normally. The injury still looked rather fresh, though it wasn't bleeding or anything. And I could see that the veins around the area were puffy and purplish. It was strange.

I was going to ask about it but she must have noticed me staring because she got a little flustered, pushed her sleeves down and quickly ended the conversation. "I should really be in bed resting. I want to try to make it out tomorrow. Thanks for coming. Bye!". The door was closed before I could respond.

I went back to my room and tried to look up the nearby hospital she walked to. I figured I should probably know where to go if anything happened to her (or me for that matter!). But the nearest hospital I could find was 15 miles away. I guess there is another one that google maps isn't aware of since she said it wasnt far and I don't think she could walk 30 miles in her state... Not having your hospital on google maps? Just another quirk of small Northern England towns, I guess.
